5 Simple Steps to Prep Your Landscape for Winter
One of the worst feelings as a property owner is watching winter’s blanket of snow slowly melt to unveil a disheveled landscape in need of some serious TLC. It doesn’t have to be that way! The secret? Preparation. Follow these five simple steps to prepare your landscape for winter and save yourself time and money come next spring.
1. Aerate
Aerating your landscape encourages water, oxygen, and fertilizer to reach even the deepest roots. Come spring, your plants will be well-nourished and ready to bounce back to life — even healthier than before.
2. Fertilize
Aerating and then fertilizing your lawn provides knock-out results as the aeration process prepares your property to best absorb and use the fertilizer. This is an essential step in preparing your landscape for winter’s harsh climate. Fertilizing your turf near late fall gives every plant on your property the essential nutrients needed to survive the winter, and thrive come spring time.
3. Rake Leaves
While raking leaves is often viewed as a chore of preference, it is actually a necessary chore if you wish to have healthy grass come spring time. Leaving fallen leaves and debris on your property prevents the grass beneath it from receiving sufficient sunlight to remain in good health. Play an audio book on a sunny fall day to make raking feel like less of a chore, or pay a neighbor kid to do it for you!
4. Clean Up
This step is different than step three! Read closely. Fall is a superb time to rid your property of any dying or otherwise unwell plants. Taking this extra step decreases the odds of plant-borne diseases and invasive insects spreading to the healthy plants. The longer this step waits, the more work you will make for yourself, as the number of dead plants you will eventually have to clear slowly increases.
5. Prepare for Snow
Whether we like it or not, the snow will eventually come in abundance. This is southern Wisconsin, after all! With the famer’s almanac predicting heavy snowfalls this 2020 - 2021 winter season, you will save yourself so much stress by setting up arrangements with a snow and ice removal company before you need one — and most importantly — before they are all booked.
