Crucial Steps To Successfully Replant A Tree
The idea of replanting a tree can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be! If done properly, almost any tree can be replanted and thrive for a lifetime. These straightforward steps will ensure your tree is replanted properly and lives a long and hearty life.
Preparation
Most trees thrive when they are planted during the dormant seasons. This could be either in fall after the leaves drop or in spring before plants begin to bud. It is important for the weather to be cool to allow the trees to properly establish their roots. Container trees can be planted at any time during the growing season as long as they are given appropriate care. In tropical climates, any time is good to plant a tree as long as it can be properly watered and cared for.
Oftentimes trees lose the majority of their roots when they are dug up at a nursery. This can cause them to go into “transplant shock” when they are replanted. The trees then grow much slower and take a significantly longer time to adapt to their new location. Proper preparation and handling can help prevent root damage and limit transplant shock.
Execution
These simple steps will allow your tree to flourish:
Eliminate all possible hazards both under and above the ground.
Identify the widest part of the trunk near the bottom of the tree.
Dig a hole 2-3 times wider than the roots, just deep enough for the roots to be contained.
Place the tree in the hole leaving the widest part of the trunk partially visible.
Fill the hole firmly and pack the soil around the tree to eliminate air pockets.
Stake the tree if it appears to be in a fragile condition.
Place mulch around the tree to hold in moisture and reduce weed growth.
Water the tree at least once a week and keep the soil moist.
